DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING
Pianoforte, dir. Jakub Piątek, 2023, 89′, Slovenian and English subtitles
On Wednesday, 2 July, at 21:00, the amphitheatre of the Slovenian National Theatre in Nova Gorica will come to life for the first time as a summer cinema venue. The documentary Pianoforte by Jakub Piątek will be screened – a moving portrait of young pianists competing for the top in the legendary International Chopin Competition. Among the film’s protagonists is Alexander Gadjiev, a world-renowned piano virtuoso who hails from the Gorizia region and is also the cultural ambassador of Nova Gorica-Gorica, the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025.
PIANOFORTE
The film follows a diverse group of young musicians from all over the world – competitors in the legendary International Chopin Piano Competition, held every five years in Warsaw, Poland. They have been preparing for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity since childhood. Director Jakub Piątek gives the audience a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the competition, where euphoric highs are interspersed with painful lows. He captures with acute sensitivity the relentless pressure these musicians are under, in an experience full of tears – of exhaustion, despair and the ecstatic joy of playing. Pianoforte is both a tribute to the power of great music and an intimate portrait of coming-of-age pianists who face the rigours of competition, gruelling rehearsals, new friendships, plenty of drama – and even more trepidation – along the way.
Free entry.
The event is organised in cooperation with the Festival Prečkanja-Sconfinamenti, the Kinoatelje Institute, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, the Slovenian National Theatre Nova Gorica, and is part of the official programme of ECOC GO! 2025.
